Couples Avoid. It’s a Group hotel
Paid extra for the old hall (the pretty picture that lures you in) only to find the facilities closed due to a noisy private wedding!
Think music til gone midnight etc. Bars in this building also closed to residents. The walk in the rain to breakfast in the main building was soggy but the breakfast was actually pretty decent for the price. They advertise it at £10 at check-in so don’t pre-pay for more like we did!
We tried to complain but fell on deaf ears, and the phone in the room didn’t work either when we tried to speak to their operations manager.
If you are a couple looking for a luxurious break do yourself a favour and don’t book here.
It’s more suited to groups like the coachloads of SAGA guests when we had the misfortune of staying.
The food is absolutely terrible- the breakfast was almost inedible. Tasteless watery eggs. Dried mushrooms. Disgusting sausages. Very poor fruit selection which had obviously been cut up hours before and was dry.
That was in the main hotel.
The food in the conference centre was no better for lunch and dinner.
Booked a night at this hotel as it was close to where my sister used to live, and she wanted to go back.
The main reception area is nice, as is the bar area, restaurant and grounds! Beautiful grounds with a very long drive. I can’t help but feel that this hotel is falsely advertised though, the rooms are not in the ‘hall’ as I booked thinking they would be.
Instead, our room was in something like the old stable block or coach house I actually don’t remember the same.
The room Inside was okay, the decor was nice but a lot of the fittings were tired and dirty, including massive stains on the curtains and lamp shades. The bathroom was the saving grace of the room.
Our window had been taped up with black tape and looked horrendous, and all the woodwork on the doors and windows was rotten and totally unappealing to the eye.
This place needs a serious case of TLC for it to be worth the money they charge. Even the spa/pool was in need of what appeared to be a good scrub!
This was booked for my sisters 30th birthday getaway as we both have kids and I have to say I was deeply disappointed with it. Unfortunately I more than likely won’t be returning.
What an absolute disaster!
Came for a night away for my partners birthday, before I start we paid just under £90, we are regularly at different hotels so we’re not expecting The Ritz. Had been attracted to it from the wonderful reviews online about location and setting.
Arrived and quickly checked in, however, when arriving at the room not only was it dated and old-fashioned, it smelt so strongly of bleach we had to open the windows as well as discovering it was a twin bed and not a double as we had requested. Decided to go down for lunch and settle the room issue after lunch.
Arrived at the newly refurbished restaurant where building work was still going on seated and seen to quickly. We ordered two coffees and were offered two glasses of prosecco to celebrate the refurbishment, however 20 minutes later had no coffee or prosecco nor had anyone came to take our order for lunch.
We saw the coffee behind the bar for over 10 minutes but no one had moved them, when we told this to a waiter, he went and got them then placed them on our table!? Lukewarm coffee after 15 minutes not ideal… club sandwiches were nice.
And they did move us to a double room, so we were happy enough and had a wander to explore.
We’re weren’t best pleased with lunch and didn’t know whether to go back for dinner but there were no other restaurants nearby and as it was raining we didn’t want to go into Stratford, so decided to give it a go.
Went down at 8 for a drink and a table, we’re told that the restaurant was sold out but we could eat in the bar area which we were fine with even though it is a through road for all hotel guests and the doors caused a constant draught as there was a wedding going on so constant in and out.
The menu was the same so we didn’t mind.
We ordered at the bar which was a long process because “our table didn’t have a number” and waited. 20 minutes later our starters arrived after one of them was dropped on the floor. 45 minutes after this our mains arrived.
Other half desperately wanted the brownie so we order the chocolate brownie and an Irish coffee. At this point we had already been sat down for over an hour and a half. At 9.40 we ordered dessert and coffee. By 10.35 these two things still hadn’t arrived. The coffee had been made and once again was sat on the back of the bar for over 10 minutes without anyone moving it. It was then brought to the table in a cognac glass without a handle so was too hot to pick up. All these things, although not acceptable, could have been put down to being busy or lack of staff.
However we counted 7 members of staff including a man who seemed to be the supervisor although we were unsure what he actually did whilst some of the others ran round like headless chickens.
The Barman was left completely alone even with a queue at one point of over 8 people, despite seeing this, a blonde waitress and her brunette colleague decided to have a nice chat by what must have been the glass washer, neither of them lending a hand to serve nor did they fill the glass washer despite their being a whole array of glasses on the bar all night.
The barman didn’t have enough clean glasses so was washing glasses by hand and then serving drinks in them!? Or putting them in the glass washer for a few seconds and then rinsing them out with water!?
When we went to check out we expressed how disappointed we were and wished to talk to the duty manager before paying for the cost of the food on the room, instead of listening to the complaint the receptionist just said don’t worry about paying!? That’s not what we wanted as the feedback then was not passed on which has lead to this review instead.
Bitterly disappointed but worse than that a terrible experience for my partners birthday.
