Pros and Cons
Had stayed here 14 years ago and returned this June for a week stay in a 2 bedroom. We were disappointed in the up-keep.
Our patio had heavy wooden picnic table and chairs that were covered in cobwebs and spider eggs. There were also peanut shells on the patio. The inside of the unit although rather snug, was clean and had all the necessities.
There is no shower in the master bedroom, though, just a whirlpool tub with hand-held shower nozzle that was inconvenient to use and allowed water to get on the floor. The exterior maintenance has deteriorated since our last visit.
At the entrance to our unit, there was some trash laying in the grass. I picked up what was right by our door, but the rest was still there 7 days later when we checked out. The stairwell was also very dirty.
The only maintenance person saw in 7 days was someone mowing the golf course. The landscaping is rather sad with weeds growing in all the barely mulched areas, tree limbs all over, and shrubs in need of trimming. The mini-golf carpets very much need replacing. Golf holes 1&2 are by the lake and the tee off area and greens are covered in geese droppings. I realize this will happen, but it should be cleaned at least every 3-4 of days. The piles were absolutely everywhere on the greens making it impossible to play. The biggest complaint is no Wi-Fi in any units, just at the activity and check-in centre. The activity centre/pool closes at 9 pm which seems early for peak summer season and the pool does not open until 10AM.
For the positives: there is a pool, 18 hole mini-golf, a small lake with canoe rental and fishing, basketball, shuffleboard, 5-hole par 3 golf, tennis, ping pong, and darts. The activity centre has a large selection of DVD’s and board games for free checkout and a Wii with many games.
This place is fairly remote with the closest place for groceries/restaurants 15 minutes away in Festus. St. Louis is about 50 minutes.
This place has potential but is in need of TLC.
Some really bad, some good, a little great
Due to a tendon injury, I called the resort and corporate offices a week before our vacation to request a walk-in unit. After a 7-hour drive, we arrived hot, tired, sweaty, and hungry to be told there was no walk-in unit available. This wasn’t a request because I don’t want to walk stairs, it’s because I have very few steps in my day. The “solutions” presented to me; get sent to a hotel for a night or a lower unit accessible by walking down the sloping lawn were both unacceptable. We ended up in an upper unit which meant that once I was downstairs for the day, I was out and once I returned and went back upstairs, I was stuck inside. I did all that I was supposed to do to secure a unit that was accessible and there is no excuse whatsoever for not having a walk in for me.
The unit was cool and clean, a 2/2 lockout. In the morning, we discovered our coffee maker didn’t work properly and we had to go to registration to get another and return the broken one. Our ice maker didn’t shut off. Maintenance was very nice, but couldn’t fix the problem, which necessitated us emptying the ice bin twice a day. On the outside of our building, there was a piece of siding trim hanging.
Shower pressure was good. The bed was comfortable. The lake was clean and stocked. The pool was clean and cool on a hot afternoon. There was plenty of shade with umbrellas and enough chairs and chaises for all. There were a number of kids, but they were well-behaved and had parental supervision. There is no lifeguard.
The activity center staff was the highlight. Nice, helpful, happy to make fresh popcorn even 10 minutes before closing. There was homemade zucchini bread for sale.
WiFi is at the registration building and at the activity centre. It was a nice way to gather with other families.A 20-minute car ride is what you need to get to food and the movie theatre and the small-town mall, aka Walmart.
Our best meal out was pizza at Pogolino’s in DeSoto. Everyone knows everyone, but townspeople are friendly and happy to tell you about the area. We found a little Thai restaurant in Festus- that was a surprise.
St Louis is about 45 minutes away. River City casino is up I-55 with a decent buffet and dedicated poker room.
There was more I wanted to do at the resort itself but is limited to one trip downstairs and one trip back up prevented me from running inside to grab a bathing suit or going in to make a sandwich. It’s a shame.
Not that great
We stayed here on an RCI exchange. There are a few good things about this resort.
The grounds and the units are very clean.
Everything is well maintained.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
The pool is clean.
The mini golf and the 5 hole golf course are both very nice. The path around the lake is also good. All of these things save this place a little bit.
Otherwise, this is s very small resort.
The first issue is that it is located very close to the highway.
The noise of transport trucks is very present all day long. Especially in the morning.
Also, the sound of guests walking in the unit above is very loud. Every step sounds like it could come through the ceiling. The resort is very busy. It seems as though they allow day pass guests on the resort to fish in the lake and swim in the pool.
The units have no view of anything. The rear view is other condo units, the front view is parking lot. The unit itself is dated and looks tired. Just as an example, the coffee maker was barely functional. It was of very poor quality.
Units do not have wifi. Seriously, no internet in 2016!?!?!
They also don’t have a washer and dryer in the units. The resort is about 40 minutes outside of St Louis, so it really isn’t that close to the main attractions. I do recommend the Blue Owl bakery in Kimmswick and Smokee Mo’s BBQ in Arnold. Both great places to eat.
Overall, this isn’t a place that I would visit again.
Disappointed
We came for a relaxing and fun family vacation.
The grounds are nice and the folks here have been friendly.
However, when we checked in, they asked if the bottom floor was ok since it was available. Sure, we’ve stayed on the bottom in other places-no problem. This is place is different.
The walls are PAPER THIN.
We have had the pleasure of hearing the people all around flush the toilet, shower-every bit of plumbing is so loud and it seems as though that’s all we hear. Except we also get the pleasure of hearing the people and kids above run, walk like they are wearing bricks all night (I’ve had to call on them.)
Also, we have had people above us talking loudly outside on the walkway at 645am.
If you want a restful, relaxing place stay away.
If you have babies like me, stay away.
It is NOT worth the time or money. Save yourself a headache.
Go somewhere where you get what you pay for.
If you have a timeshare through RCI don’t waste your points. I just wish I had known before coming!!
Timber Creek resort in De Soto, MO
My parents and I flew into St. Louis from opposite coasts and arrived in the afternoon then had to drive to De Soto.
When we arrived at the lodge it was hard to get someone’s attention to help us, they were not friendly at all. Then our room wasn’t ready and the lady informed us that check in was at 5pm. As if to say we were too early to be checking in.
When I looked at the time it was already past 5:00pm and then her tune changed saying how they had so many people checking out that day and it was just so overwhelming so our room wasn’t clean yet. Mind you, there was only one other couple in the lodge with us at the time and everything was very quiet. They said they would call us when the room was ready. So we went down the road to get dinner.
At 6:30 there was still no phone call. We contacted the lodge and they said our room still wasn’t ready. So we decided to go to the local grocery store and buy bottled water and snacks for our room.
By 8:00pm we still had no phone call. We drove back to the lodge and at 8:30pm our room still wasn’t ready! By now we had a very long day of traveling. No explanation was really being given for the delay.
Staff would hardly make eye contact with us. Its like they were trying to ignore the situation and our increasing frustration. They were having some personal conversation right in front of us. It was very inappropriate and unprofessional.
We could understand if something unexpectedly happened but no apology was given whatsoever and the fact they were rude and unapologetic is completely unacceptable. We were given free meal coupons at their activity center because our room hadn’t been ready on time, (still no apology)
The food at the activity center is disgusting by the way. All pre-packaged food that is heated up and very greasy. If you would like a nice breakfast out go to the Country Cafe down the road. Excellent food and homemade pies.
When we did get to our room (which actually wasn’t supposed to be ours but they had to give us someplace to stay cause our intended room STILL wasn’t ready) it was clean and well kept.
I was disappointed again in the staff the day that we left when we went to return the keys. They hardly pay attention to you. So our actual living quarters for the week were clean, make sure you keep your voices very low because the walls are extremely paper thin!
Our biggest complaint is about the rude and unprofessional staff at this property.
They need some etiquette and training on interacting with guests!
Worst vacation experience EVER!!!!!!
We drove 7 hours to get to this location. Our friends were lending us their timeshare because they weren’t using it.
Upon arrival, we were told by a girl with a handwritten id that they would not check us in unless our friends came with to sign us in. I bought the confirmation letter I was emailed saying we had a reservation.
After 10 min, the girl was able to find our reservation in the computer but said there was nothing she could do unless our friends drove here to register us. We were told to leave.
After a 7 hour drive, we had to get back in the car with our 3 young children and drive all the way back home!
We called other hotels from the car but they were booked. I have never been treated so rudely or poorly by a hotel.
The girl and the “manager” were the most inconsiderate and uncaring people.
When I asked if there was a place nearby I could get dinner for my children, I was told to try the gas station! Worst experience EVER!!
