Beautiful property, but in dire need of upgrades for basic utilities
Stayed here to visit some friends who live locally and to be near Legoland.
Upon arrival, it seems they really try to make this a feel of luxury, but yet still a bit cold or reserved (although professional). I found out it is a timeshare Hilton property, rather than a hotel with varied reviews for the timeshare portion.
The room was overall very nicely decorated. They had an odd floor plan, but I am assuming this is due to it being an older property. The outdoor amenities appears nice as well and used by many of the families staying.
The brewery next door was no more than 15-second walk from the closest door of the hotel. Once in our room, we found several outlets that did not work or some plugs literally fell out of the wall.
This is not good with a family who has many devices and ending up choosing to either having lights that worked or charging your devices. I ended up unplugging the mini frig and DVD player with some contortion moves to plug our items in to charge. The more frustrating issue (because we would survive without fully charged items), is that the plumbing backed up in our bathtub the last 2 nights of our stay on the 2nd floor. I did not call, as the 2nd night was a minimal issue, but the last morning of check out was absolutely disgusting with contents of the pipe flooding the bathtub 2 inches. It must be very difficult for this property to function as they offer $5 credit if you don’t use room service, so I assume they struggle to hire housekeepers.
We were not given the credit on our 2nd to the last day and just wanted to leave rather than rectify their mistake. I would warn other families to just consider the new Legoland hotel across the street.
This place reminds me of the Hilton in Beverly Hills when it was run down during the later Merv Griffin’s ownership era…certainly not the glamorous establishment one would expect from the photos
Great Staff and Location; Shoddy Rooms
My family has been visiting Carlsbad for over 27 years. That’s a timespan that predates my birth. Being said, I feel like a local each time I visit. I know where the tourist traps are and how to avoid them. I know where the hidden gems are.
I was so excited to visit Grand Pacific Palisades. I remember when it was first built and how cool it seemed; a hotel across the street from Legoland! With 3 room suites! It just didn’t get better than that.
This year my family and I had the opportunity to visit for the first time ever. I have to admit, I was impressed when I saw the portico and huge lobby. I was even more impressed when I heard the resort had room service; that is sort of a rarity when it comes to resorts in the area.
When I first came to my room, I noticed outdated and ugly adobe paint. It was a fad to paint every building that colour in the 2000s and it really aged poorly. I felt like I was trapped in 1998. The rooms had these number plaques that I guess we’re supposed to look like surfboards? Anyway, they were ugly. I know that’s picky but I really felt like for the area and the price, the resort exterior could look better.
I stayed in room 259, it was a 3 room suite and it was pretty big! I did not feel like I was on top of my family for a week. It was awesome. The maids were some of the BEST I’ve experienced in Carlsbad. They will replace your towels every day if you leave your room early enough. I know that’s not very environmentally conscious but it was really nice.
The resort offered in-room family movies on channel 3 and that was the best! I saw Zootopia and Ferdinand in peace and enjoyed it. At Carlsbad Inn, they obnoxiously play the movies on the lawn, in front of my room. I think all resorts in Carlsbad should adopt the in-room movie thing.
The Karl Strauss restaurant is delicious and the room service arrives at a decent time. I recommend the duck fat pretzel bites and the pork belly sandwich.
Now, this is the more critical part of the review. The rooms are really beat up! They look awful if you have a critical eye or even just a minor case of OCD. The shower in the second bathroom of 259 has no fan in the surrounding area, the paint adjacent to the shower is actually sagging. It’s ghastly. My sister’s bed was supported by a piece of wood, like the kind you get at Home Depot.
The balcony was at one time structurally failing. I know this because it has hideous support beams keeping it up. If you weigh more than a hummingbird, stay off that balcony.
The fan in the 3rd bedroom was slanted. I couldn’t sleep with it on because it sounded like a rodent on a wheel all night long. The fireplace was screwed up, the frame of it was crooked. The lock on the door was missing a screw.
Overall, the room just felt sloppy. I hope not all rooms are like this but really, not one room should be like this. To me it felt like there was a lack of pride at the resort when it came to the rooms. I would pay more if it meant that I would not feel like I was at a dive. Stay away from 259 if you can help it.
Would I stay here again? No. I will tell you why it really does feel like some of the resort rooms are unequal on purpose. Don’t believe me? Walk down to room 277 and take note. That room has plants outside of it, a beautiful frosted glass door and it looks like there are plenty of windows in that room too. Why should 259 be so much worse than 277 when my family owns over 30 timeshares and recently dropped a small fortune in upkeep fees? If you want an equal room experience, stay at Seapointe.
Not so grand
Every year when we visit LEGOLAND, our family stays at La Costa. After I felt it was slipping a bit as a “luxury” resort, I thought I’d try something new. I thought I had done my research but I guess I didn’t realize that grand pacific is some hybrid of hotel/condo/timeshare. But the hotel offered the least amount of rooms.
Unfortunately, that’s about it for the good stuff.
Cons:
Now to the bounce house issue:
I have a 6 yr old so I’ve seen my fair share of these things. The hotel had 2 young employees working it making sure the ratio of big to little kids was ok. There are a set of instructions/warnings posted right on the outside of the bounce house. The first warning was MAKE SURE THAT THE STRUCTURE IS ANCHORED INTO THE GROUND. This was not. When my husband asked the staff why it wasn’t, they just said “this is how they do it”. NOT ACCEPTABLE.
That is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
In all fairness, the hotel waived 2 nights of the resort fee for our issues.
Needless to say, not returning and not recommending. Back to La Costa next year.
Disappointed
As stated by another reviewer, this is mostly timeshare hotel. I stayed in Bldg D and it was horrible.
The room was extremely outdated, rust in the sink and bath, and extremely noisy.
The beds are solid as a rock. The check-in process took a long time and they forgot to write my room number on the key pocket.
Luckily, I caught that prior to going to my room.
I ordered room service from the Karl Strauss restaurant and it was delivered cold! Will not be coming back to this hotel!!
Better than sleeping in your car?
Booked last minute so of course had slim pickings when booking a hotel. My family’s priority was having a suite or 2 bedroom unit. This was the only property I could find that had any availability during our travel period- I guess that should have tipped me off!
The property is a Hilton timeshare location. It is by far the worst timeshare property I have ever rented in (in comparison to the Westin and Marriott timeshares that are great!). The walls, floors, trim around the doors, light switches, EVERYTHING is old and dingy looking.
It probably is clean but because it’s so worn it just looks dirty. The kitchen cabinets are old faux laminate with countless chips on the front of the cabinet doors and on the plastic countertops. The dishwasher did not work. The bathroom doorknob (in the first unit we were in) was broken so you couldn’t even open the door. The walls are thin and you can hear everything and anything that goes by your front door regardless of where you are in the unit. I noticed they are renovating some units. By renovating they are removing the carpet and replacing it with plastic laminate flooring. The furniture is being stored in the parking garage so I’m assuming they plan to reuse it… when in fact some people in hazmat suits should be trying to dispose of it.
The only thing positive I can muster to say about this place is that the employees are all very nice- all say hello and good morning to you when you see them and try their best to help you. It’s not their fault Hilton gives them nothing to work with when they’re trying to maintain this property. It is also a 3 minute walk to lego land- the main driver of our stay here.
Timeshare
This isn’t a hotel but a timeshare.
I was under the impression this was an upscale hotel. The room is ugly and shabby with cheap and worn furniture, flooring, towels etc. Doesn’t have basic amenities you expect in a nice hotel room. It’s in a great location but my room has no view at all.
Apparently, they just have queen beds (I requested a king but they don’t have any). I can hear people walking around in the room above me at midnight. There’s a vending machine for coffee with artificial creamer and one for DVDs. Just basic cable. Nice looking pool.
