Construction Noise may ruin your vacation
Oceana Palms is a lovely resort.
We checked in and our Oceanview villa faces an active construction site.
Cannot sit on the balcony for all the noise.
We are at the pool and all we can hear is construction noise.
We realize that the noise next door is out of Marriott’s control, but the amount of construction noise is unbelievable. So disappointing.
You may be very disappointed!
I am currently sitting in the shade by the pool where at this time of year the sun, by 12 noon, falls behind the massive apartment complex currently being built within a literal stone’s throw of the hotel.
Aside from the sun blocking shade caused directly by the position of the new construction, there is the constant and deafening sounds of jackhammers, drills and wolf whistles drowning out not just the sound of the ocean but numbing the senses, preventing any peace of mind or peace of any kind that is so desired on a vacation!
Yes, we were informed up front that a little work was taking place during our stay but not that this new building complex marched at least 50 metres beyond the hotel’s boundary line with ceaseless construction continuing all day every day.
I would have thought that the mighty Marriott Group would have fought tooth and nail to prevent such a monstrosity taking shape in their own back yard? Belittling the experience they offer and rendering it useless!
Sure, in the summer the sun will set later, but with the addition of this new build on the Riviera Beach landscape, the pool area will forever be in shade from early on in the day ruining for many what may be an eagerly anticipated break of lazy days by the pool.
If you think that you can find solace in the distance of the beach, the noise echos all the way to the ocean’s edge. You’ll find sun, but no respite from the deafening noise of construction.
Everything else is as typically Marriott as you can get, clean, comfortable and spacious rooms with staff who are eager to please, but I suspect they’re desperately overcompensating for this debacle they’re currently trying to counteract. Sadly, no amount of smiles can compensate for the most anxiety-inducing experience of trying to soak up the sun or indulge in a lazy day by their shaded and shrouded in noise pool!
Disappointed is an understatement
We have been coming to this property since it opened. We are owners and visit at least 2 times per year. Our experience this time has led us to find a new vacation club location for our next vacation.
On our original reservation, we requested a high floor condo on the north side to avoid the construction. We called 2 weeks prior to our reservation to ensure our request would be honoured (as it always has in the past being mvc owners and platinum elite) at that time they told us we were all set.
Upon arrival we were placed on a low floor on the south side with a great view of the construction next door. They advertise this as an ocean view room, however, we have a very minimal view of the ocean.
The shower in the master bathroom leaked uncontrollably. They sent an “engineer” up to look at it and the engineer informed us they know of the problem and have ordered parts. No one informed us of this upon our arrival. Shouldn’t this have been disclosed? Why are you allowing guests to stay in a room with a broken shower? Because of the incredibly large leak we needed many towels each day. We waited for towels for over 45 minutes to be delivered after calling and saying we needed more towels. This property does not seem to value its guests.
The beds in the 2nd bedroom were VERY uncomfortable, felt as if we were sleeping on concrete.
And last but certainly not least due to the massive building being constructed next door the sun is gone from the pool by 2 pm and the sun is gone from the beach by 3:30.
This trip has left us feeling very disappointed in Marriott and we will be finding somewhere else to stay on our next vacation.
Well, there’s always sunshine!
Recently visited Oceana Palms in the midst of Red Tide and the year-long construction next door.
During the week stay we encountered one scheduled power outage and one unscheduled. The construction pounding noise is real and constant throughout the day except lunchtime and from what I was told they are behind schedule.
Good thing is there are plenty of good rooms opposite the side of the noise. We were given an ocean front view which was wonderful even with the construction noise and view.
The beach was open with RT caution signs abound for those who wanted to venture out onto the sand. For the most part, we stayed close to home and hung around the pool area, enjoying the great Marriott staff.
If you want to find warmth and sunshine nows a good time to go, just bring your earplugs.
Good hotel... Uber passengers beware....
There are three Marriott properties in Riviera Beach. This is one of two Marriott Vacation Clubs and the smaller of the two.
Apartments are well appointed with everything you would expect from a Vacation Club. The gym is top notch with a great range of cardio machines and mostly new equipment. There are lots of children’s activities, fun splash pad and Kid’s Club. We weren’t travelling with children, but there was clearly plenty to do for little ones.
As other reviewers have noted, do request a north facing apartment. A new condo building is under construction immediately adjacent to Oceana Palms and construction noise is loud and long. You will also hear the noise when by the pool.
This comment is not related to the hotel, but I wanted to include it as Oceana Palm guests may take Uber from West Palm Beach airport to the hotel. My friend and I did this and experienced a normal, uneventful 20 – 25-minute ride to the hotel. We were shocked to look at my friend’s Uber account to find a $150 cleaning fee (apparently because we had thrown up over the vehicle – fake photo downloaded from the Internet submitted to Uber by the driver) had been applied. It took days to get this charge removed as it was basically the driver’s word against ours. It was frustrating and upsetting, particularly as we had given the driver a five-star review. Uber eventually determined the ‘throw up’ photo had been submitted by the same driver multiple times and refunded our account. Upon further research, it appears this is a common scam in Florida. Do take pictures when you leave your ride in case this should happen to you.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at Oceana Palms. The food selection at the market is not as big as at other Marriott Vacation Clubs, but big enough to have a light breakfast. Check out is at 10.00am and it is virtually impossible to have this extended. We managed to arrange a late check out at 11.00am, stored our bags at reception and showered in the gym locker room. This worked well and allowed us to enjoy more time at the beach.
Beach umbrellas do cost to rent, but chairs are free. There are some great fans by the beach which provided welcome relief from
the June humidity.
