tired old suites
While the people were very helpful and friendly it could not mask the tired furnishings and poor layout of this place.
The two bedrooms we had, had the most uncomfortable dining room chairs and high back chairs around the very small counter. We had 6 of each of these and there was no room to even place them where they belonged.
There was also only seating in the living area for 3 people even though we had 4, and it is advertised to hold 6! The bathroom areas was also an adventure as the sink was outside the bathroom (shower and commode) and very difficult to use if one person wanted to sleep while the other used the facilities.
The second bathroom was even more uncomfortable as it was down a hall and there was no privacy if you wanted to go from bedroom to use the sink which was out in the open. We solved that by buying a pressure curtain rod and a long, blackout curtain and put it down the hall.
It, therefore, gave the entire area some privacy.
We were all disappointed as this is a diamond property and as diamond owners, at other resorts, we were not expecting this lower quality.

Hotel insists on a hold on your credit card at check in but does not successfully release it
At check in we were told there will be a hold on our credit card for up to 10 days. It has been nearly 3 weeks but the credit card company says the merchant still has not properly released the hold on the credit card.
I have called the hotel 4 times over the last couple of weeks but there continues to be a merchant hold.
I finally tried the resort’s 800 number without remedy of the situation – pretty frustrating for a first time visitor to this hotel chain! I have never seen this before at any resort.
Did they perhaps change their billing services in the last month or release the hold on someone else’s credit card instead of ours? Disappointing.
This is not a hotel
The Varsity is not really a hotel. It is a low price, budget timeshare development that rents suites. It is perfectly adequate and great for budget-conscious families, but there is no restaurant, no real service to the rooms, ie. no linen service, no luggage assistance etc.
There is a nice pool.
We were here for parent’s weekend at the U, and had trouble finding a place even though we booked 6 months in advance.
The place is very clean, the rooms are well equipped with a kitchen, an adequate bathroom with a surprise jacuzzi tub and all white, very comfy bed. The hide-a-bed was atrocious – the worst we have ever encountered and slept on the floor was more comfortable.
The decor and fixtures are budget and tired.
Cigarette burns on the furniture, tub surround and sink countertop. However, the hotel is undergoing remodelling and I assume the rooms are being upgraded. BTW, construction noise was not a problem. However, street noise was.
Pick a room toward the back off the very busy street. We were in 212, and apparently, people like to drag race until about 3:00a.m.
Street noise doesn’t usually bother us, but straight pipes and screeching off the mark does.
I don’t know what other reviewers are talking about when they cite surly help. Everyone was overwhelmingly nice to us and greeted us every time we passed by.
Gold Member has no clout
We own at Diamond Resorts, and are Gold members which are supposed to entitle us to certain benefits, however, we have yet been able to utilize these benefits. Example: We booked for this June 28-July 2 2014 stay at Varsity and specifically asked for a particular room and were told we had that room locked in. Upon check in we were told the room had been given to someone else the night before!!
I checked and there were 16 other rooms available online through Diamond booking. I had asked for the specific room because it had a larger living room and I wanted to have all my kids and grandchildren in for a meal. At 106 degrees it is too hot to do this out by the pool, especially with an 18 month old child.
The room we were given had a very small living room so I was unable to do the meal with my family. There just was not enough room. When I complained to Corporate, I was told that Varsity had told THEM “We tried every way possible to put them in a room of the same size as what they were promised”. That is a LIE!! They did not. In addition, the range top had been left askew by housekeeping and had to be reconnected by maintenance before I could cook. They only have two outdoor grills and they both were being used. Our “view” consisted of a palm tree trunk…..We have a sampler to consider upgrading to Silver.
We will not be doing so since we cannot utilize the benefits as Gold members. At the high price of the “points” not to mention the maintenance fees, it would be ludicrous for us to do so. We also always get the upgraded amenities as Gold members and have at this resort, but had to ask for them this stay. I also noticed at this stay that the halls did not look as though they had been vacuumed in a while. The band-aid on the ceiling fan is a nice touch don’t you think? Overall, I would not recommend Diamond Resorts as a timeshare and if you want a specific room at Varsity, forget it. We have stayed at some very nice resorts through Diamond, Varsity Club is not one of them.
Noisy luxury
Do not stay here if you are a light sleeper. Traffic noise from Speedway and Alvernon is horrible! Sirens. Buses. Squeaky brakes. Motorcycles. Ugh.
Get an interior room out stay elsewhere.
Pool and hot tub above average.
Bedding and towels and bed comfort average only.
Our tub shower curtain was quite discoloured with red mould.
Couch was coming apart.
Front desk staff super friendly.
Also a timeshare.
