A tired & outdated hotel. Dreadful disorganized reception staff.
The hotel is very run down and in desperate need of an update. Our experience from booking to check out was chaotic!
I made the booking months in advance and gave my card details over the phone and heard the lady type these into the machine. Despite this, the deposit was never taken. When I called to understand why I was told that they have written my bank details down wrong?!
This does not add up. Customers bank details should not be written down at all… and I clearly been on the phone when the member of staff took the initial deposit and confirmed it had ‘gone through.’ I gave my bank details again and this time the deposit was taken.
Following the booking, I called a further two times to get an email confirmation of the booking. I never received this.
Upon check out the staff tried to charge us for two nights with dinner, when we only had booked for one night B&B. Had we received the confirmation that we chased we would have been able to demonstrate this! We found the reception staff confrontational and rude in accepting their booking error.
I followed up with an email after we had left and again felt that the staff response was unacceptable.
In summary – Beautiful grounds and a good location but do not expect a 4 star hotel or service!

Spa nightmare
Me and my friend visit spas regularly.
We saw an overnight stay with Groupon for £155 so booked it looking forward to a relaxing spa weekend away. We were left disappointed. Check in was abysmal, we were kept waiting for such a long time. There were no details given to us either verbally or written about the hotel or facilities either at reception or in the room. We were in room 112 which was large with a nice view but terribly old fashioned.
Next, we tried out the spa; alas we were bitterly disappointed. It was heaving with people. Children were throwing themselves into the pool and playing ball splashing guests; hardly a relaxing atmosphere.
The pool was cold so we didn’t stay in long. We had to queue for the tiny sauna and steam room (the latter was tired looking). We queued for the jacuzzi which was more like a warm bath when you got in. It was crammed with people like sardines. It was half empty and really shallow.
The Jets didn’t appear to work properly; the majority were letting off a few bubbles or none at all with two spraying uncontrollably high into the air and in my friends’ eyes leading to them becoming bloodshot. We then spotted dirt and big hairballs on the sides and quickly exited. We couldn’t find a lounger so sat awkwardly on wicker chairs. The changing rooms were dire.
I used the toilet and had to stand in a puddle with bare feet, god knows what I stood in. There were cold stagnant puddles all around the poolside which made walking around unpleasant and a breeding ground for bacteria. The water tank had 1 cup left so we had to share. It was also warm so I think it has stopped working. There were no staff around to ask questions or ask for more cups. It is being renovated but there was no need for this level of overall shabbiness. We didn’t stay long. We came away disappointed and stressed. Breakfast was a buffet (which was disappointing in itself). Mass production of tasteless food. The only good part of the 3-course meal which really was superb. It really wasn’t worth the money !!
Over rated , bad experience
Where do I start?
The food is really good, the breakfast was really nice, self-service and good quality.
The Afternoon Tea was poor with small portions. The evening meal was good we really enjoyed it. The bar meal was also very good with a good menu.
The accommodation was very varied as we stayed 2 nights but had 3 rooms.
Room 109 was our first room, supposed to be Deluxe but was very gloomy with a drab 4 poster bed in it. The lighting was very pail with one of the lights not working. The wallpaper was peeling and the ceiling looked like it had been repaired by an apprentice.
The skirting boards looked as though they had not been cleaned at all.
After complaining about the light and it not being fixed for over 2 hours we went to reception and complained and they put us in another room.
Room 104 was our second room, although only a standard room this was much better, it had been refurbished and we were happy to accept the new room. All was well until we went to bed and realised we were next to a generator which was noisy all night and we got very little sleep, the next morning when we found our shower door would not close we complained about the noise and shower door we were told we could move again.
Room 218 was our third room, again a standard but much better than the previous 2 and we had a lovely sleep.
All the rooms had single glazed windows that were cold and drafty and the heating varied.
If I stayed there again I would ask for a refurbished room that was away from the generators before I stayed.
We thought we would be able to walk around the huge grounds but due to Health and Safety, we could not go on the grounds at all so the only walks were around the house site and some walks in the local hillsides.
The location is lovely and rural and the building itself is impressive.
Disappointing
Very disappointing sent an email to the hotel and they failed to respond.
Very uncomfortable bed.
Had to send down for a duvet to put in the bed as it was Hard as nails.
It was two single beds put together which made it even more uncomfortable.
The food in the bar was warm when served.
It was overpriced. £4 for a bowl of French fries which contained approx 15 chips.
We had to send down for pizza at £20 which included the £5 room service charge because.
We had problems with the bathroom and the heating. The staff were however lovely and did what they could to help.
So so
Was given a Sunday sleepers stay over by our friends as a present. I think if I had personally had to pay I would have complained.
Went for afternoon tea first, got seated and asked about tea or coffee. At no point did anyone try and upsell us Prosecco or champagne, I would have definitely had a glass or two if they had. The food was quite shocking. The finger sandwiches were so lame that I wouldn’t feed them to a child. Barely there tuna, egg and ham. No salmon. No prawns. No garnish. Nothing fancy. For a hotel of this supposedly standard surely their afternoon tea should be out of this world. Cakes were dry and the scone not homemade.
Room was adequate, good size and the receptionist was really informative and friendly. Little sticky note with directions to the room which was lucky or there was no way we would have found it.
The bar was busy and had a nice atmosphere. Went for dinner and was given the menu.
Food wasn’t too bad but not of the standard I would have expected. Small portions and the Gravy was so salty that it ruined the dinner really. The waitress was so confused over our mains that she came out saying the kitchen had already sent them. Three times I told her that the check in her hand wasn’t ours. She then took our full water jug away. But random.
Breakfast wasn’t bad. Coffee machine not working. Then working. Then not working. Sausages were well overcooked but it was ok.
All in all I don’t think I would go back. I understand they are doing a refurbishment but the standards of the food and service need to be improved.
