We arrived at the Pestana village on Monday 17 June, the young guy on reception was extremely nice and polite, we were then shown to our apartment. On arrival at the apartment, we noticed that there was no view outside our balcony as it was on the ground floor and the balcony was shaded by overgrown plants.
We then headed to the restaurant A vila, this was buffet food which was average quality but plentiful. We then went to the bar next to the restaurant for one drink, no entertainment.
The following morning we asked if it was possible to be moved onto a higher level in order to have a view, we were told they would look into this, a few hours later we returned to reception to find out if this was possible, to be told that there was no availability in the village hotel however we could move to the adjoining hotel Miramar the following day. This we decided to do, we had a better view and we were extremely pleased with the staff for facilitating this.
The bed in the village apartment was like sleeping on the floor (beware). The beds in the Miramar were much more comfortable. We thought as a treat and to make things easy we booked breakfast for every morning. Breakfast was very average and nothing to admire, the staff in the breakfast restaurant are extremely unhappy and don’t make any effort to chat, a very miserable atmosphere.
We also booked 4 nights evening meals, one in each of the restaurants, A Vila, Louigis and Adega. A Vila was very average buffet food, Louigis was poor Italian, we saved the best till last, or so we thought, Adega was outside next to the pool as it is Summer, on arrival there was one girl waitress, she walked past us and left us standing at the entrance to go and take an order from 4 people sitting at a table, fair enough we thought, this left us standing for approximately 5 minutes, the waitress turned around and snapped at a young waiter who had just come into the restaurant, she gestured and pointed at us, this left us feeling uncomfortable, this was not the fault of the young waiter at all, as he had only just arrived.
We were shown to our table and left for 10 minutes to browse the menu. By this time the young waiter had disappeared and was replaced by another young lad who was a trainee, the waitress returned to take our order and stated that the voucher we had purchased at reception entitled us to a starter, main course and dessert, I ordered the chorizo starter which stated chorizo on toast with garlic. The starters arrived some 20 minutes later. I couldn’t believe my eyes, I had 2 links of chorizo on a plate and that was it, no toast, no garlic, the chorizo was cremated, needless to say, I didn’t eat it all, another 20 minutes past before my steak arrived, I couldn’t fault the steak it was delicious, however the chips were frozen french fries, in an ‘a la carte’ restaurant!!!!!
We waited another 25 minutes after finishing our main course before the waitress arrived and asked us what we wanted for dessert, by this time we had had enough and left without desert. The waitress apologising for the delay, blaming the 16-year-old trainee. The trainee was brilliant, very polite, and very obliging. To be fair the waitress was also very polite and talkative, just not organised in a restaurant which only had 8 tables occupied. Needless to say, we won’t be returning and highly recommend anyone visiting this hotel to eat outside and save some considerable amount of money.
The grounds in the hotel are magnificent, the plants are fantastic, very confusing layout to the complex with average and quite dated rooms and furniture. We have one day left in this hotel and hope to see some smiling faces on the staff. Management takes heed, you really do need to get your act together, go and see the receptionist in the spa, as she knows how to greet people and has a smile for everyone, she spent every morning at the entrance to the breakfast giving out discount vouchers for the spa.
Oh and as a matter of concern, there was a huge crack in the balcony concrete which towers over a walkway, this is an accident waiting to happen, I reported this to reception over 48 hours ago, only for a maintenance man to arrive immediately, he stated his concerns and said he would mention this to management, nothing has happened since.
This is a huge concern as I have vast experience in the building trade so know of the risk.

Mixed
Pestana Miramar is linked with another Pestana hotel, the Village. This makes it a nightmare to navigate. The rooms are good, although ours(1707) never got the sun on the balcony. It’s essentially an apartment with sitting area, small but well-appointed bathroom and kitchen area. Nice big Austrian twin type bed.
But. There are virtually no services. The only restaurant for breakfast or lunch is in the other hotel through a rabbit warren of corridors and the bars never seem to be open, even the pool bar. Nice exterior pools (one for each hotel), and small interior with the very slippery bottom not really suitable for aqua aerobics, though they try! Good spa. I had a good massage.
We only ate in the hotel once as the food was terrible! Chips with everything
Bit tired
Not one of the best Pestana hotels in Madeira it seems to be a little tired and the room we had although spacious could do with updating especially the tv and bathroom
Unfortunately some of the staff seemed to be just going through the motions and finding your way around and looking for places to eat was sometimes difficult
The other Pestana hotels in Funchal are much more up to date and would be our preferred choice
Madeira if a beautiful island and well worth a visit with some fantastic restaurants Plenty to see and do
Disappointing 4 star hotel.
We stayed here last week and were surprised at it being a 4 star hotel. We had booked a superior Miramar studio which had a 2 ring cooker, kettle, a few pots and 2 cups saucers plates knives and forks and a small fridge. The room was accessed via a very dark and foreboding corridor which was outside but covered by the corridor above.
The room was very dark with an outlook over half the garden and a large tree outside.
The beds and pillows were very comfortable with a selection of pillows. The bathroom was an average size with a line over the bath to dry any washing or towels as drying on the balcony not allowed.
There was air conditioning though, not needed in November. The food was a disappointment in as much that there was not much choice at evening meal. Each evening there was a fish dish or two, a couple of meat dishes, rice, potatoes and two veg usually including the carrots or broccoli.
Some evenings there was a show cook which was only roast beef or steak. The starters were on a round table uncovered and not in a cool area which wasn’t good especially with mayonnaise and salads/meats. The desserts were very similar each evening, mousse type, not many cakes, no ice cream and the fruit salad was never refilled so if you were eating later as we were there was only melon and pineapple left.
Earlier there was strawberries, kiwi, grapes, oranges. One evening there was boiled meat, boiled potatoes and slabs of cabbage and carrots. Very disappointing for a 4 star hotel. There were lots of choice at breakfast but always the same.
More people ate at breakfast so this explains why there was so much more.
The entertainment left much to be desired. Guitarists, singers were not too good and some out of tune.
The entertainment which started at 8pm, was in the same room as the dining room with a stairs up to the dining area so everyone could hear it if you ate later.
One evening there were Madeiran singers/dancers who stood in the dining room singing raucous songs and trying to engage people to dance with them whilst they were eating. This completely spoilt the evening meal.
Pestana need to rethink if they want to retain customers.
Visit in high season!!
We are regular visitors to Madeira and try a different hotel along the coast each time.
We picked the Miramar as it is a very convenient location to both the old Funchal and the new with its high rise hotels and we loved the look of the place – very colonial with large gardens which it shares with the Pestana Village Gardens.
It is a large, rambling area and a map is needed to find your way around but ample pools, lounge areas etc.
Our apartment room was large and airy with a lovely balcony which overlooked the front of the hotel – very picturesque – do remember to put the sign on the door for the cleaners as otherwise they don’t come in. Do try the Al a carte Miramar restaurant – excellent food and friendly service and not overly expensive compared to the buffet food served in the main dining room which was all edible but not particularly good and not much variety – we certainly wouldn’t bother with it again should we go back.
We were unlucky with the weather as it was colder than expected and this was reflected in the hotel – to sit in the bar or the restaurant it was really quite cold and the corridor connecting the two hotels acted like a wind tunnel – not a pleasant place to spend the evening but that’s where the Wi-Fi was easiest accessed.

Not bad
Stayed here as a timeshare exchange.
Apartment clean and we’ll appointed. On same level as pool which was good. But on the main road so constant traffic noise.
Not conducive to sitting on balcony!
Only restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and snacks was in hotel next door (Pestana Village); a long walk away up several floors.
Not even sodas and icecream by our pool.
Food ok, plentiful and reasonably priced – buffet style.
Staff friendly and helpful but no real atmosphere in the hotel.
Overall, Madeira wasn’t really for us but if we did decide to return, we’d probably stay at the Pestana Carlton instead.
No traffic noise and much nicer ambience – but more expensive of course
