Discriminates against the hard of hearing
Lodges are OK, with a slightly random collection of kitchen equipment. However the biggest issue, given that these are luxury lodges, is the woeful TV situation. Not only are the TVs hideously old, analogue lacking all modern connectors, but worst of all its impossible to get subtitles! To get these they would have to turn them on centrally for the whole site, which they were not prepared to do.
Given that two of our party are hard of hearing / deaf and rely on subtitles to access TV, it’s beyond belief that a 5 star resort would discriminate in this way. Having complained to the lodge maintenance team, we got nowhere, the issue apparently being out of their control, (suppliers, lodge owners, timeshare legal grey areas and BT’s fibre infrastructure were all blamed). We also discovered that the same issue would have occurred if staying at the main hotel!
It’s my understanding that hotels / rental accommodations should have considered the issues surrounding accessibility many years ago when the DDA came into force. Add to that, the knowledge that analogue was going to be switched off years in advance, there really is no excuse.
If you are hard of hearing, have a family that wants to use any that connects to a TV, avoid Cameron House and The Carrick like the plague!
A very disappointing short break!!
Having travelled a lot and stayed in numerous 5 star hotels I was extremely disappointed by our choice of short breaks. Having not been away since our baby was born we were looking forward to a relaxing, luxurious short break with our 10 month old. We arrived at the hotel at 2pm and tried to check in to our lodge. We were told that check in was 4pm but they would contact us if the lodge was ready earlier. Most 5 star establishments allow you to check in at 2pm, this would have made life easier with a baby!
We made our way to the hotel to get some food. The concierge recommended the Scots Bar as the most baby friendly place for lunch, we took his recommendation and he showed us the way. So far so good, the staff in the hotel seemed polite and knowledgeable. This first opinion was very wrong! We stood waiting for a young girl to stop fiddling with some papers for at least 5 mins to find out if we just took a seat or whether we had to wait to be seated. We then waited an eternity for a menu; this was surprising as the place was only 20% full. We asked if they had high chairs and the response was “we can get you one if you want”, as this was the baby friendly bar we were surprised. We got a high chair but our daughter wouldn’t sit in it as she towered above us sitting on sofas (not a child friendly experience). We ordered lunch which was very very very overpriced but after our journey we had no option. The food was mediocre at best; the beef in the sandwich was barely visible and the club sandwich was poor. We had a call to say our lodge was ready (20 mins early).
We made our way to the lodge over what could only be described as a road similar to those we had driven on in rural Kenya! The potholes was numerous and extremely large, an off road vehicle should have been provided! Rather than enjoying the views (which were excellent) we were negotiating the off-road track to ensure our tyres remained intact. You expect a luxury hotel to have a decent road, if we had a low suspension sports car I wouldn’t have taken the risk of driving to our lodge. The outside of the lodge was dirty which gave a poor impression. The door had not been washed all year and rubbish littered the car parking area. Thankfully the interior of the lodge was a pleasant surprise. It looked clean and tidy with a reasonably modern feel about it. The DVD player and dryer didn’t work and a couple of the glasses had the last residence dinner on them but now I’m just being fussy. We took a meter reading for the electricity on arrival so we could make sure we weren’t overcharged.
The first night we had booked a set menu meal at The Boathouse Restaurant. On arrival, we were given menus (not the ones we had asked for) and had to ask and wait for the cheaper dining menus. One out of 3 of the main courses was unavailable and had been changed to a different chicken dish. We ordered our meal and put our little girl on the floor to play as it was fairly quiet. The floor was filthy, within minutes she was black. I wouldn’t expect a 2 star establishment to have such dirty floors! The meal was average and we had to wait 15 minutes for the dessert menu. The wine was overpriced to start with but a 10% service charge it pushed the wine up even further, there must have been over 300% mark up on the wine!
The leisure facilities were good. The pool was lovely but we found it a little weird the children’s pool was colder than the main pool; after 40 minutes our little girls lips were going blue (this never happens at our local pool).
We gave The Boathouse a second chance as we were too lazy to leave the complex on another night. We wished we hadn’t, a takeaway pizza would have been a better eating option. The first high chair we were given couldn’t hold our 10 month old up and she nearly slipped out of the bottom of it. The second high chair had no strap on it so she started standing to eat; we ended up having to nurse her for our entire meal. For starters, we both choose a dish containing mussels. They were like eating rubber bullets! My husband ordered a pizza for main course as we thought you can’t go wrong with a pizza, at over £13.00 we hoped not! It was swimming in fat and he only managed 3/4 of it. My ribs were horrible; at least 40% fat. We did, however, wait to get back to the lodge to have a nice bottle of champagne; we weren’t going to be ripped off again.
We checked out the evening before as a 10am check out for a family-friendly lodge is very early. We were shocked to find the electricity had cost us nearly £25. We checked our meter as we hadn’t used much and were out all day every day, our meter didn’t work. The charges seemed made up but we just paid them as it seemed to be Cameron House’s way.
We will never return and will never ever recommend this to anyone with taste buds! If you want to go you will have to travel a long way to find good food or cook (not an option for most people on holiday).
Not 5 star Accomodation
Having booked a short break on the internet through the De Vere website I was looking forward to staying in the luxury of a 5 Star lodge on the shores of Loch Lomond, with beautiful interior decorations and modern facilities as shown on the website. Not the case!
The lodges at Cameron House are dated, tired and in need of a significant makeover and our particular lodge smelt stale and musty. Having checked in at 5.30pm we checked out at 5.35pm, having passed on our thoughts about the accommodation to the gentleman on reception, I think he got the message!
I enquired why our lodge did not live up to the lodges shown on the website…Simple answer, they are not at Cameron House! The lodges shown internally are based at the Carrick, 4 miles up the road, and externally from another location though certainly not Cameron House!!
If your staying in the area go to Mar Hall Hotel, beautiful location, exceptional service and fantastic suites.
Not what we expected
We stayed at the hotel about 10 years ago and had a great experience.
Unfortunately most things have slipped so the overall experience was pretty poor. It started with a long wait to check-in, then there is no offer to show you to the lodge. On arrival the lodge was absolutely freezing and in complete darkness, very unwelcoming.
The TVs did not work, we called maintenance twice and they only turned up when we had given up and gone to bed, they promised to come next morning at 9.00, they didn’t we had to call again.
Internally a few things showed the lack of attention experienced throughout, loose floor tile in the kitchen, very messy mastic around the shower, chips on bits of old furniture that had seen better days, poorly fitted carpet, electric heaters which made you boil or freeze. Why you are expected to pay for electricity is a mystery, just build it into the price.
They also have an invisible concierge, if you see him you are lucky. The service in the restaurants is so slow sure not to go in hungry. The steak in the Cameron grill was tough and at £49 for 2 courses I would expect a nice meal – it wasn’t.
Overall I would say the place is badly managed, it lacks attention to detail and the guests seem unimportant. The only positive is the setting.
